Twists…

Twists…

My name is AureeOlyn. I am ToureDeForce’s (Energi) younger brother. I initially was the one that got him to go natural after much poking and prodding. Growing up, my brother had hair off and on, corn rows and a cut much like mine. I have never had hair. After a few years of getting deeper into making everything from hair/body cream to deodorant and cologne, I figured i wanted to grow my hair, but just on top. I convinced my brother to go with me. We are both a few years into the natural hair thing and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I actually feel a deep sense of community and family with the entire natural community. Its so important for us to be able to walk as god intended. Beauty is not a one size fits all deal. It’s such a joy to be apart of a movement and a lifestyle that is deeply embedded in diversity. Variety truly is the spice of life. My brother submitted his picture here and it inspired me to do the same. I have stalked this blog for a few months now, just admiring all the natural guys. I hope it continues forever! :)

Naturally Natural: Frederick Douglas

In the February 1917 edition of Champion Magazine Richard Greener reflects on his memories of his friendship with Frederick Douglass, revealing that Douglass’ hair style was in tribute to famed writer Alexandre Dumas.

“[Douglass] spoke warmly of his travels abroad; of seeing the elder Dumas in France.
‘Did you ever see a good picture of him?” he asked. [FD]
‘Yes, sir,’ I said. ‘and I have read after him.’ [Richard Greener]
‘Good. Did you note how he wore his hair?” [FD]
‘Yes, sir, long and conspicuously.” [RG]
‘That is why I imitated him. He was not ashamed of ‘fleecy locks and dark complexion,’ was he? They did not ‘forfeit nature’s claim.’” [FD]
